'98 'Niners win Super Bowl VIII 37-14 over '99 Indy

'98 'Niners win Super Bowl VIII Sunday 5/3/2009 12:45am EDT.

Stu Geller and the 1998 SF 49ers won the CFL's Super Bowl VII by a score of 37-14 over Ed Mikhli and his 1998 Indy Colts. The first half of the game was close, with Ed holding a 14-13 lead over Stu's crew. The second half was all about the 49ers who scored 23 unanswered points and shut out the vaunted Colt Offense.

Steve Young was the game's MVP going 26-31 for 393 yards and 4 TD's. Peyton Manning in contrast was only 17-35 for 232 yards, which was his season low. His 2 INT's were also a big factor in the game. Future HOF'er Jerry Rice had 8 grabs for 194 yards and 2 TD's.
The victory was Stu's first CFL championship in his second Super Bowl appearance. Ed Mikhli (SB VII Champ) is now 1-2 in CFL Championship play.

Congrats to all for a great season...and as the song says, "see you in September...".

Silence of the ELAM's

I wished my fellow coach good luck before our matchup with the following quote "Hopefully a ridiculous penalty doesn't decide the game". Our computerized game wanted to prove that it has feelings and instead punished me in other ways. I was the first to receive and went out in 3 downs and then kicked, 82 yard kickback for a TD, then my next possession got down to the Jags 20. It's 4 th down and 2 to go, I look at my kicker (ELAM) and his rating is 100 %. Hmm, do I go for it or play it safe. I remembered the old saying, 3 is better than none. I brought in my kicker and hence be "sold", blocked and ran back for a 72 yard TD. I was down 14-0 in the first 5 minutes and Jacksonville's offense had yet to touch the ball. And oh yeah, I was sacked 4 times in the first quarter. Can I apologize to the computer game now ;(.... RRRR

KC 22, NYJ 16

Fresh off their heartbreaking 1 point loss to Indy, the Chiefs took their road show to the Swamps of Jersey to fact the J-E-T-S, Jets, Jets, Jets. New York has a high octane offense with two 1,000 yard wide outs (Keyshawn and Chrebet) and the steady feet of future HOF'er Curtis Martin. KC is built around a stifling defense and a mistake free offense. KC dominated the first half, but had only 9 points to show for it. Their red zone offense couldn't crack the goal line. Give credit to Andy W's bent don't break style of D for minimizing the damage that the Chiefs could do. KC needed to control the ball and burn clock to keep the high octane Jet "O" off the field, especially since 2 of their defensive starters (Derrick Thomas & Brian Washington) went down to injury in the first 3 plays of the game. The second half saw New York score 10 points and take the lead. Curtis Martin busted a 64 yard run down to KC's 8 on the Jets first play from scrimmage in the 2nd half. Fittingly he would score the Jets first TD of the game 2 plays later. KC's usually reliable signal caller Steve Bono tried to fit in a medium pass to Keith Cash, but instead it wound up in the arms of Aaron Glen who returned it for 9 yards to KC's 26. Thankfully for the Chiefs their defense held NY to just 3 points as John Hall booted a 25 yard chip shot. Both teams traded punts before the Chiefs took over on their own 24. Bono then engineered a fine 10 play 5 minute drive that culminated in Kimble Anders catching a 3 yd TD pass. KC was now back up top by 6. NY then went 3 and out. KC did just the opposite with a classic 13 play drive that consumed 8 minutes of clock, but most importantly put them up by 13. Steve Bono again tossed a short pass for the score. This time he found Lake Dawson in the flat for what looked like the icing on the cake. Vinny and the Jets weren't convinced just yet that it was over. KC helped out by squibb kicking and giving the Jets great field position (their 40). Testaverde went for the homerun ball and barely missed a double teamed Chrebet. KC assumed that Vinny was going to go the aerial route again and dropped back into a zone. Vinny handed the ball to Martin who cut between the tackles for 44 yards, which took the Jets down to KC's 14. A pass to Keyshawn netted 10 yards and a 6 yard toss to Chrebet again made it a 1 score game. Most important was the fact that only :40 seconds ticked off the clock for the drive. On the ensuing kick off John Hall botched an onside attempt and the Chiefs recovered with 1:35 left and NY owing 2 time outs. 1 first down was needed to end the game. Marcus Allen fought hard for 7 yard vs a stacked run D, which forced NY to take it's 2nd time out. Expecting the Chiefs to run again the Jets ran a run blitz, but Bono tossed a quick screen to Keith Cash, who rambled 30 yards down field. Two Steve Bono knees later the Chiefs walked out of the Meadowlands with a well earned victory and a guarantee for at least a tie for the division lead.

Jax outlasts Pats 23-20

Jags 23 Patriots 20 This was a see-saw battle with both teams exchanging big punches. The Jags built a 10 point lead but the Patriots would rally behind Curtis Martin 15 carries for 93 yds 1 TD. Brunell had 2 INT's but also made some big plays for Jax. going 14 of 25 for 274 yds and a TD. Most of the yards were to Jimmie Smith 6 cat-151 yds. Kyle Brady also was big with 2 rec for 50 yds and a TD.Lest we forget the defense Tony Brackens 2 FF 4 tackles and a sack. Ty Law 1 tackle, 1 deflection and 1 INT saving 6 pts in the end zone. Vinny, by a nose !!!

Seattle dominated this one until the 4th quarter when they ran out of gas and answer. Testaverde, which means interception in Italian, engineered the comeback that culminated with an 11 yard TD pass to Leon Johnson on the final play of the game. Coach Andy Weinrib coached a brilliantly conservative game for the win. Seattle was able to move the ball at will for virtually 3 quarters, but their inability to score TD's and their ability to accept FG's were their undoing. Ricky Watters had a huge day (21-103) for the 'Hawks, but in the end he had nothing left in the tank and Seattle could not run the clock out. Vinny Testaverde was able to lead the Jets on a fantastic 13 play drive that started on the Jet 7. In 4:07 seconds he was able to drive the team 95 yards and overcome a 6 point deficit for this fantastic road win.

Chiefs edge Broncos in OT thriller

Lin Elliot OT hero
Mile High Stadium - This classic Monday Night Football matchup between AFC West rivals did not disappoint. The first quarter, like the opening round in a heavyweight title fight, was a feeling out process. With the 1st 7 possessions ending in punts even the casual viewer had a suspicion that this was not going to be a day for offensive fireworks. By the middle of the 2nd quarter Elway had had enough of KC's stifling defense. He was able to orchestrate a huge 10 play 90 yard drive that culminated in a 14 yard toss to Rod Smith to break the ice. KC's Steve "don't call me Sonny" Bono answered back immediately with a 8 play 77 yard scoring drive. Thinking pass the Broncos were trapped in nickle D as Kimbal Anders rambled in from the six to deadlock the game at 7. Before the half ended Elway engineered one of his great 2 minute drills. KC made a terrible mistake going conservative and giving the blonde bomber enough time to weave his magic. 5 plays later Elway threaded the needle and the double covered Rod Smith for a quick 6 point. KC took a few knees and the halftime score was DEN, 14, KC 7. Elway opened up the 2nd half like he finished the first, on fire. He engineered a 9 minute drive that finally stalled on KC's 3. Jason Elam came in to nail a 20 yard chip shot, but in this game of football nothing is a given. Pellom McDaniels got his hand on the low kick and blocked the ball. With the chance to go up by 10 the Broncos lost a golden opportunity. The begging of the 4th saw Tamarick Vanover return a Tom Rouen punt 30 yards to the Bronco 47. Bono went almost exclusively to the run as Greg Hill and Marcus Allen were able to cut through Denver's pass defense. Once inside the red zone the Broncos decided to key the run and Bono tossed a beautiful play action pass to Allen who scored from the 8 to tie the game at 14. The next 2 possessions saw both offenses shoot themselves in their collective feet. First the normally sure handed Terrell Davis fumbled on KC's 40 after an 8 yard run, then Bono threw an untimely pick to John Mobley on Denvers's 29. Both defenses were committed to not allowing another point to be scored and the game was forced into OT. Denver won the toss and was forced to start from their 20 after Kin Elliott booted the kickoff out of the endzone. Elway was able to move his squad to his own 42 before the drive stalled and Rouen came in to punt. Starting on their own 27 the Chiefs began to drive. Bono mixed his offense up beautifully keeping the Broncos off guard. There were no big plays on this drive, just a lot of 5-8 yard gains. Denver began resorting to the blitz and Bono began tossing screens, with the final one netting 9 yards by Webster Slaughter. On 3rd and 1 from Denver's 10, Lin Elliott came in and booted a 27 yard game winner in this opening day classic.

Dirty Birds conquer greatest show on turf.

Falcons use a strong game from Jamal Anderson and a couple of ram turnovers to pull off the road win. Curiously the Rams didn't throw long in this game. Rumor has it that St. Louis owner Georgia Frontiere had a long discussion with coach Anthony "Mop" Barra regarding all the weapons at his disposal. Kurt Warner was heard after the game thanking the good lord for allowing him to suffer through the adversity of mop's grind it out offense. He feels they will be stronger as the season goes on and that his wife (Brenda) might abandon that butch "do" that she's been sporting. Gossip columnist around the NFL speculate that the couple is looking to get an endorsement contract from "Soul Glo" hair products.
